LOCATION

The Hawkesbury-Nepean estuary, located on the NSW Central Coast in Greater Sydney, is one of the longest coastal catchments in Australia. At over 470 km long, the river extends from south of Goulburn all the way to Broken Bay and drains over 21,400 km2 of wider catchment land .

Due to the massive extent of the Hawkesbury-Nepean catchment that spans 24 council areas, it was agreed that to effectively address system-wide issues and risks (including those of the wider catchment as well), the CMP study area should only cover the tidal waterways of the river, including Brisbane Water Estuary, Pittwater Estuary, the Hawkesbury River Estuary and Broken Bay.

One of the aims of this CMP is to link lower and upper catchment programs and governance bodies to improve river health across not just the estuarine reach of the study area - but across the waterways and contributing catchment of the wider Hawkesbury-Nepean River system.
