Help shape the future of the Hawkesbury-Nepean River System. Draft Coastal Management Program (CMP) still open for feedback

The Hawkesbury–Nepean River System is at the heart of our region. It’s where people come to swim, fish, paddle, grow food, connect with nature and spend time with family and friends. It also holds deep cultural significance for Aboriginal peoples and supports local communities, industries and ecosystems.

Extending from Broken Bay to Yarramundi — and including important waterways like Pittwater and Brisbane Water — the river system links diverse landscapes and communities. What happens in one part of the catchment can be felt across the entire system.

Why a long-term plan is needed

The river system is facing increasing pressure. Continued population growth, expanding development, coastal hazards and climate change are affecting water quality, natural habitats, access and safety.

Issues such as erosion, coastal inundation and competing waterway uses are already being experienced — and are expected to intensify over time without a coordinated response.

To address these challenges, six councils have partnered to prepare a draft Coastal Management Program (CMP). This plan sets out a shared, long-term approach to managing and protecting the river system for future generations.

Built with community input

Community knowledge and feedback have played a key role in shaping the draft CMP. Input has been gathered from:

• local residents and river users

• Aboriginal knowledge holders and First Nations groups

• community and recreational groups

• councils across the catchment

• state government agencies

This draft reflects what we’ve heard so far. Now we’re inviting the community and related stakeholders to take a final look and help refine the plan before it is finalized.

We invite you to review the Draft CMP and let us know what you think. All feedback received during the public exhibition period will be considered before the CMP is finalised.
